S is for Sing a Song

A-Z Challenge.

Random Sightings No 19.

Here in Leicester we like a good pork pie. Although traditionally associated with the Leicestershire market town of Melton Mowbray, where they have Protected Geographical Indication status*, similar pies are produced elsewhere in the county. The giant specimen pictured below with it's distinctive fluted pastry (Melton pies have a different style of pastry) was on display over Easter in Walkers Pie Shop in Leicester.

The old children's nursery rhyme begins:

    Sing a song of sixpence,
    A pocket full of rye.
    Four and twenty blackbirds,
    Baked in a pie.

    When the pie was opened,
    The birds began to sing.
    Wasn't that a dainty dish,
    To set before the king?

Walkers Pie Shop and below some normal sized pork pies.

*Protected Geographical Indication status, means that only pies made within a designated zone around Melton, and using uncured pork, are allowed to carry the Melton Mowbray name on their packaging.

  1. I have never had a pork pie. Is it special? How? Some day.

    1. They're eaten cold and go well with a picnic. They can be a bit on the rich side but they are tasty.

  2. A real show stopper pie there although perhaps not that appetizing. Oxford Covered Market has a cake shop I always visit to window-gaze as they have some stunning designs for whatever the current special occasion might be from Valentines and Easter through to Hallowe'en and Christmas.

    1. The cake shop sounds interesting. I'm hoping to get along to the Cezanne exhibition at the Ashmolean. Which day is market day? Maybe you could post some pictures.

  3. Have never had this pie. It does sound good and I would love to try someday. Recipe? (The black birds look a bit creepy).

    1. I only make ordinary pies. I'll have to look out for one on the internet.

  4. This is a great example of food I've heard about (maybe read about?) all my life but never been anywhere where I could try it. Guess I'll have to visit Leicester for that ;)
